the waiting bench

The bench for waiting is an element form the tea ceremony.
Guests would sit here for a while, after strolling through the tea garden to ingest the special atmosphere . The host would welcome the guests from here and accompany them to the tea house where the tea ceremony will take place.
A whiling bench is usually canopied to offer shelter from wind and rain. It is a wooden construction, the walls are mostly rendered in clay and the roof is covered in wooden shingles or thatched.
